Summary Weapons List (link)
Arms and Equipment Guide (brands)
Both melee and ranged combat is common in the Star Wars universe, however it's rare that you would go into melee without a weapon designed for doing so.
The most commonly spread of the melee weapons are typically Vibroweapons (link). These can come in many different shapes and sizes, designs, and names. Almost any bladed weapon imaginable can be converted into a vibroweapon, with enough patience and skill. Shock absorbers are typically added to the handles of these weapons. The blade is vibrating thousands of times a second, and as such it can make the weapon unwieldy without an absorber, or someone strong enough to keep it in check.
Lightsabers (link) and various kinds of crystal-focused "light weapons" aren't as uncommon as you might think. The Lightsaber itself, going by that name, is most commonly used by the Jedi, however, weapons of similar design do crop up every so often, as well as actual Lightsabers stolen from dead jedi. While powerful, "light weapons" do have a major weakness. Cortosis (link), a rare brittle ore, is known to disrupt the circuitry in these weapons. Depending on the purity of the alloy, this can range from simply shutting the weapon off, to disabling it for several minutes at a time, which effectively makes it useless. Cortosis or is often "woven" into something, such as armor, or made into an alloy with other metals, specifically for use in metal plates or even as anti-lightsaber weapons themselves.
Weapons aren't the only way to fight in close quarters, however they are the most efficient. There are various martial arts styles out there, it's up to you to find one!
Of course close combat is dangerous, and puts you in harm's way. There are also Blasters (link) which can be used at long range. These are modeled anywhere from small pistols, to rifles, to sniping equipment, anything you can imagine. Blaster technology is extremely versatile, simply particle beams fired from a focuser device, typically with easy-to-replace batteries.
There are of course other types of ranged weapons, however they are much rarer, and typically more expensive. A good deal of them are also illegal, though in his day and age, who's going to enforce it?
