Naturally. Security reasons and all that.
But I suppose the same reasons would limit (severely limit) public access to this kind of information. Especially if the person checks the "Don't wish to share" box in the application papers, or whatever they have. Thus, Bandit would know, as he's the computer, and Hangar would know, as he's the Captain, but those who don't require to know have hardly any chance to learn.
So, let's me put it this way: instead of "...and there are no reliable means to check" read "...but you can always try to bribe Bandit into telling you".
