As you know now, the RP is set in 2011, which is only 3 years ahead of our time-yet they're so much more advanced. How so? Simply put: historical differences.
Long story short: religion went throguh a major downfall and was replaced by science MUCH earlier in their history, the people being more open ot ideas than we were. "Witches" and "Wizards" were replaced by "Geologists" and "Chemists" at a much faster rate. Certain trends are the same, however; tings that wer epopular at times in our history were pretty much the same for them (Disco in the 70s, finned vehicles & such in the 50's, etc.). Other historical events such as Wars also tend to coincide with our own, though the one that realy provides a stark contrast is their version of WW2. For the people of (planet name pending), WW2 was more like Starship Troopers or Halo; people were much better-armored, weapons were very advanced, the idea of "dropships" was still new-though they were still relatively new-gasoline had been replaced by electricit/hydrogen, etc.
That's pretty much all I can come up with; feel free to ask questions.

I was simply providing a contrast of this world's technology at that time to ours.

Wait, what do you mean "planet name pending"? This may be an alternate universe with an alternate history, but this is still Earth with all its present countries and locations. We didn't change any of the other planets' names, so why bother with this one? It'll only confuse readers/viewers as to which solar system the story takes place in. I could accept an alternate "earth" name, though, such as Terra, and even then only for intergalactic use.

I'm with Shani on this one. Also, the easiest way to explain why they have technology way superior to our own in this time would be to say this, and only this:
Rome didn't burn down the great libraries of Alexandria. It has been predicted by some of the world's greatest minds, that at least technologically speaking, if Rome didn't burn down these libraries, that Columbus would have been the first man on the moon.
Of course that's just a technological comparison to a time frame. Imagine landing on the moon in the 1400s or so.
