It has been brought to my attention that BSG has a lot of "funny" words that should be thoroughly explained for those who wish to RP here and aren't quite as "veteran" as me when it comes to BSG. With that being said, here's a list I started. I'll add more as I think of them/remember them.
Ship Classes
Battlestar - The largest class of ship in the Colonial Navy. A Battlestar is essentially a combination of a Battleship and a Carrier. It has lots of firepower, lots of armor, and the capability to land and launch fighters. It's effectively a floating city. Galactica can hold some 3500+ people and a more efficient and modern Battlestar like Pegasus can hold about 2500+. It would be safe to say that Atlantia can hold 4000+ easily, if not more.
Baseship - Though only used by the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica, a Baseship is basically a huge mobile fortress. They typically don't have the cannon fire power of a Battlestar or a Battleship but they carry a lot of fighter aircraft and a lot of missiles. Overall, a Baseship has a great deal more firepower than a Battlestar but has less armor. They also have the capability to repair themselves as they are part organic.
Battleship - Though no ships of this class are mentioned in Battlestar Galactica, a Battleship is a massive warship fitted with a lot of armor and firepower. Though they typically do not carry aircraft, it wouldn't be uncommon for one to have a few Raptors on board for scouting and the like.
Carrier - Though no ships of this class are mentioned in Battlestar Galactica, a Carrier would be a huge, slow, medium armored warship with light weaponry. The purpose of a Carrier is to house aircraft, which is also where the superior firepower of an Carrier comes from.
Battlecruiser - Though no ships of this class are mentioned in Battlestar Galactica, a Battlecruiser is basically a slighter larger cruiser with many armaments similar to like what is found on a Battleship. Firepower wise it can almost match or even match a Battleship but with the armor level of a Cruiser it can't take quite as much punishment. Battlecruisers might have a Raptor or two.
Cruiser - Though no ships of this class are mentioned in Battlestar Galactic, a Cruiser is a small - medium sized capital warship that sacrifices armor and heavy weapons for speed and maneuverability. Cruisers usually come with a variety of weapons, usually light cannons and anti-air defenses but a Cruiser usually is stocked with more missiles than anything else. The defense of a Cruiser is light, but better than that of a Destroyer.
Destroyer - Though no ships of this class are mentioned in Battlestar Galactic, a Destroyer is a small capital warship that's primary purpose is acting as a buffer and defense for the larger ships such as the Cruisers, Battleships, Battlestars, Carriers, etc. Destroyers are fitted with light armor and light cannons usually. A Destroyer by itself would easily be obliterated by anything larger than it.
Frigate - Though no ships of this class are mentioned in Battlestar Galactic, a Frigate (Destroyer Escort) basically acts as a support ship for Destroyers. They are cannon fodder in the strictest sense. Very lightly armored with very light firepower, they are most often seen on the outer edge of a picket with Destroyers, defending the other larger ships from attack. A Frigate could easily be ripped in two by one well aimed nuke or one barrage from a single cannon from anything larger than a Destroyer.
Fighter - The most basic of light aircraft. Often stationed on Carriers, a fighter is a small ship that is very fast with light weapons. They usually fly in formation with other fighters in order to do the most damage possible. By itself a fighter would be lucky to put a scratch on anything bigger than a Frigate before being blown to shreds.
Freighter - Freighters are non-military cargo ships. They have no armor and are only capable of Sub-Light speeds if they do not have an FTL (Faster Than Light) Drive. Some are fitted with guns but these guns would do little against anything but small ships and would be difficult to use against fighters due to their small size and high rate of speed. Some freighters may have missiles, but not many and they wouldn't do very much damage.
Civvy (Civilian) Ships - In Battlestar Galactica, there is a great deal of non-military ships in the fleet. These can range from Prison Ships, Luxury Liners, Freighters, Refinery Ships, Refrigerated Cargo Ships, and pretty much anything else that comes to mind. Some can even be as unique and amazing as Cloud 9 from Battlestar Galctica, which basically had a huge field with trees, grass, and fake sunlight to give the feeling of being on a planet. This served as a meeting place for various political events. Most civlian ships have no weapons, but some have a small some of weak cannons or maybe even missiles. They have no armor to speak of. Some may have FTL (Faster Than Light) drivers but some may only be capable of Sub-Light speeds.
Types of Fighters in BSG
Viper MKII - A 50+ year old fighter design of the Colonial Navy. The Viper MKII (Mark II) is a nimble but fragile fighter design. Though horribly obsolete, they still function well enough for Galactica as most of Galactica's fighters are Mark IIs. Mark IIs do not have FTL capability.
Viper MKVII - The most modern of military fighters for the Colonial Navy. The Viper MKVII (Mark VII) is a great deal more heavily armored and armed than the Mark II. A huge improvement on the Mark II, however, most were fitted with Baltar's navigational software and thus susceptible to Cylon viruses and easily destroyed. The only surviving Mark VIIs are the ones that were not uploaded with this software or had that software purged from it's computer. The Mark VII does not have FTL capability.
Raptor - The Raptor is a multi-purpose Colonial fighter that is capable of FTL (Faster Than Light) Jumps. It is a sturdy aircraft that is hardened against nuclear radiation. It is capable of reconnaissance missions, scouting, and even some combat. Raptors can be used to fire missiles from their weapon's pay, decoys, bombs, and other ordnances. Raptors have two crew, unlike Vipers, a Pilot, and an ECO (Electronic Countermeasures Officer). The ECO is in charge of all of the equipment on a Raptor but is capable of flying it as well. The Raptor makes an excellent transport and shuttle as well.
Cylon Raider (Old) - The old Cylon Raiders are from the first Cylon war. These old ships were maned by Centurions (the robotic Cylon model) unlike the new Cylon Raider which is part organic. They are capable of FTL (Faster Than Light) Jumps and pretty solid but not overly maneuverable.
Cylon Raider (New) - The new Raiders are essentially "living creatures" inside of a mechanical shell that functions as a fighter aircraft. They are completely controlled by the mess of guts and organs inside of them. They are capable of FTL (Faster Than Light) Jumps and are very nimble aircraft.
Cylon Heavy Raider - This variant of Raider is not seen until a bit later on in Battlestar Galactica, but it is not controlled like the regular Raiders (by an organic/living interior). Heavy Raiders are extremely tough and can several Centurions or other passengers. They have many guns in the front for weapons which could rip through most fighters or a crowd of people with ease.
Miscellaneous
Frak - Not to be confused with "Frack" (the old series spelling). Frak is basically the real word version of the word "fuck". It can be used in many manners. Such as, "Frak you!", "You frakking frakwit!", "Go frak yourself!", "Your mother is a might good frak!", or "Get the frak off my ship!" and many more. A very universal word that is used relatively often.
FTL - The FTL drive, or "Faster Than Light" drive, is basically the mechanical portion of a ship that allows hyperspace jumps. It is a very vital element of any ship that has it as it allows for that ship to get out of harm's way in a matter of minutes, giving proper calculations. However, after a total system failure on a ship, it can take twenty plus minutes to ready a ship for a FTL jump after power has been restored.
Sub-Light - This is basically the term given to the max speed of most vessels that do not have FTL capabilities. Though fast by today's standards, a Sub-Light speed ship is easy prey for missiles, cannon fire, and fighters.
Nuke - Nukes are seen in Battlestar Galactica in many forms. Nukes can be used as huge, heavy missiles for the purpose of planetary bombardment. Nukes can also be used in medium sized missiles for the purpose of attacking capital ships. Nukes can also be used in the form of a bomb which needs to be placed and detonated either wirelessly or manually. Nukes used in space aren't quite as crippling as Nukes used on the ground, but are still devastating. A Nuclear missile impacting with Galactica, or any other Battlestar, can easily cause lighters to flicker on and off for awhile and the shock wave can easily throw the crew around like a bunch of ants in a bottle. Nuclear Anti-Ship missiles are the primary weapons on Cylon Baseships. Most Battlestars carry some Nukes for the purpose of surface bombardment or ship to ship combat.
Centurion - Centurions are the robotic version of the Cylon race. They come in a couple of models, the old skool model and the new model. Both are very deadly and difficult to kill. Some varients of the new Centurions, for example, can only be destroyed with explosive shells to the head.
Skin Job - This is the term given to the "human" variety of Cylons. Cylons that look and feel human are just as vulnerable as humans. Though they tend to have more physical strength than normal humans they do seem to be as susceptible to emotion as humans are. However, these should probably be called "Fur Job" in our RP as most if not all organic Cylon models will be animal.
Toaster - A "racist" term used by the humans in Battlestar Galactica to refer to the Centurion model of the Cylon race. If you kill a Centurion, it is more than fitting to follow up with, "Yeah! I bagged your ass, you frakking toaster!".
Stealth Ship - In Battlestar Galactica, the term "Stealth Ship" is used and there is also a ship named the "Stealth Star". A stealth ship would essentially sacrifice some of it's armor (or in the case of a fighter or another small ship, all of it's armor) and replace the outside of the hull with carbon composites, which basically deflects radar or Draidus signatures. This is not a cloaking device or anything of the sort, but basically the equivalent of a F-117 Nighthawk by today's standards.
Draidus - Basically the futuristic version of "Radar" in Battlestar Galctica. It is used to detect other vessels within relatively close (couple hundred thousand miles or so?) proximity around the ship. Virtually all ships have this, but it can be knocked out under heavy damage.
Viper Jock - A slang term used to describe Viper pilots on ship. If you fly a Viper and are particularly good at it, you are a Viper Jock.
Knuckle Dragger - A slang term used on ship to refer to the deck crew. All of the mechanics responsible for maintenance of the Vipers, Raptors, and the ship they are on in general, are referred to as Knuckle Draggers.
Ship to Ship Missile (SSM) - This is a term given missiles fired from a ship with the intentions of hitting another ship. They range from large missiles meant to strike slow capital ships for moderate damage to small, nimble missiles launched from fighters or Raptors to hit other fighters or capital ships. Ship to ship missiles can have conventional or nuclear warheads.
Surface to Air Missile (SAM) - This is a term given missiles fired from a ground position with the intent to shoot down a vessel within a planet's atmosphere, though some sophisticated missiles can breach the atmosphere and hit ships in orbit. These missiles can be small and nimble for the intentions of downing fighters or Raptors, or they can be larger for the purpose of striking capital ships in orbit.
Flagship - This term is used to describe the Flag Officer's ship in a fleet of more than 1 military vessels. In order to command more military ships than your own, one must be a Flag Officer (Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, Admiral). When a fleet of more than 1 military vessels exists, the ship of the Admiral in command of that fleet is called the Flagship. It is most common for the Flagship to be the largest, most armored, and/or have the most firepower of all military ships in the fleet. If a the Flagship is lost in battle, a fleet can fall into disarray, making the remaining ships easy targets to an organized force.
